Skinny Fat to Fit

What does it take to go from skinny fat to fit? It depends on how much skinny fat — lack of genetic muscle — you are experiencing, and where on your body. As well as how hard you are willing to work. And what you mean by “fit”. It is very possible (1) to be “fit” and healthy, while experiencing skinny fat at the same time.
If you mean “fit” as in clear muscle definition, then the more skinny fat you are experiencing, the harder you will have to work to recomposition and “tone” to get the “fit” look you want. Keep in mind, body structure and composition are genetic and unique to each person. Just as facial features, eye color, hair color, height, hand size, foot size, genital size, breast size, and the like are all genetically determined, so is body composition and how much muscle tissue you are born with, or without (skinny fat). As well as how easy or hard it is to add muscle mass and maintain it.
The first step is accurately determining if you are experiencing skinny fat, and where on your body. The Free Scientific Skinny Fat Test is a good place to start to get a real sense of things. However, currently, our Scientific Body Type Quiz is the most accurate way to determine skinny fat. We are working on making things even more accurate with our MRI Study (2).
Skinny Fat to Fit – Metabolism, Diet, Exercise, Lifestyle
The more skinny fat (lack of genetic muscle) you are experiencing, the weaker your metabolism (3, 4). The weaker your metabolism, the less efficient your body’s glucose uptake (5, 3, 4), the fewer calories you burn, and the more careful you have to be with your diet to avoid unwanted regular white/yellow fat weight gain. A healthy diet (6) is vital to building and maintaining muscle mass to reduce and manage skinny fat, along with managing regular white/yellow body fat.
Just as proper exercise, including cardio and resistance exercise (7), but particularly weightlifting (8, 9), helps with muscle and regular white/yellow body fat management as well as body recomposition. Of course, living a healthy lifestyle (10) is also vital to success, specifically getting enough high-quality sleep while keeping stress and environmental toxicity to a minimum.
The more regular and consistent you are with healthy diet, exercise, and lifestyle routines, the stronger your metabolism. The stronger your metabolism, the more efficient your body will be in terms of glucose uptake and burning calories. And, the more effective and successful you will be at reducing your skinny fat to be fit, achieving as close to the body of your dreams as possible — relative to your unique genetics (11).
Reality Versus Nonsense Hype (Like on Social Media)
If you have ever ventured out on the web, especially social media, you have likely come across claims regarding skinny fat. Skinny fat is not (12, 13, 14, 15) too much regular fat within safe BMI — it is a lack of genetic muscle. Getting down to a low BMI, even 18.5 or less, does not cure skinny fat (lack of genetic muscle). Starving does not (16) cure skinny fat (lack of genetic muscle); it makes it worse. Losing regular white/yellow fat does not somehow allow genetic muscle tissue that does not exist to magically appear and cure skinny fat. Genetics (4, 11) is not an excuse, it is a fact.
To fix skinny fat (17), you have to add muscle mass anywhere you are experiencing skinny fat. That being said, any muscle mass you add, you will have to maintain forever. Adding muscle mass is not permanent. If you stop doing the exercise(s) that built the muscle mass, you will gradually lose it and eventually return to your original genetic body composition, including any skinny fat. Muscle cannot (4, 15, 17) turn into fat any more than fat can turn into muscle — this is undisputedly not how human tissue works. These are the current scientific facts.
You want to dispute any of that, fine, comment below with the latest contradictory science. We are happy to discuss. Remember, skinny fat science is very young, and much more science is required to clarify. Our MRI Study (2) is leading the way.
