Why Do I Have A Skinny Body But Fat Stomach – Skinny Fat Question

Hello, Dr. Skinny Fat. I have a skinny body but a fat stomach. No matter how much weight I seem to lose, my stomach is still fat. I am 27 years old at a BMI of 19.2. At one point, I got down to 112 pounds. My BMI was 18.1. Even then, my stomach still looked fat.
I admit my diet and exercise are not great. I read some of your articles and learned that I am experiencing skinny fat, and a proper diet and adding muscle mass are the best ways to fix it. However, I don’t have the time or the money to go to the gym right now. And, it is hard to eat healthy when my work schedule is so demanding.
I have looked at some of the other possible resistance exercises this site recommends. I’m just not sure which one is the best choice for my situation. What do you recommend to maintain my skinny body but fix my fat stomach?
Why Do I Have A Skinny Body But Fat Stomach – Skinny Fat Question
Your situation is more common (1) than you or most people are aware. The majority of people don’t understand what skinny fat really is (2, 3, 4) — a lack of genetic muscle. Instead, they are convinced that losing regular white/yellow fat weight is how they fix their skinny fat. But, as your experience has shown, losing weight down to an unsafe BMI of 18.1 did not fix your skinny fat. Because losing regular fat does not magically cause underdeveloped muscle tissue to appear. In fact, dropping to such an unsafe BMI can cause muscle tissue loss, which makes skinny fat worse.
As you have correctly figured out, proper diet (5) and exercise (6), particularly weightlifting (7, 8), are the best ways to fix skinny fat (9). If you don’t have access to and time for lifting weights, then Pilates, yoga, calisthenics, and/or isometrics can be useful resistance (10) substitutions that can be done at home. The variable you need to look at first is which of those are you willing to do consistently and regularly? Building and maintaining muscle mass takes hard work. Any muscle mass that you add to recomposition your body, you will have to maintain forever (9). If/when you stop the exercise(s) that built the muscle mass, you will gradually lose it (9), and eventually return to your original genetic body composition, including any skinny fat.
Keep in mind, none of those secondary resistance exercises can build muscle mass as effectively as weight training. That being said, you can add weight to help. Videos for Pilates, yoga, calisthenics, and isometrics are readily available on YouTube or the like, and we have done our best to find and organize those videos (10) on this site. Particularly relative to intensity and ability to add muscle mass (11). Thus, the likely best choice is a combination of those exercises that build the most muscle mass relative to your stomach/abs (12). Moreover, cardio exercise (13), as simple as briskly walking 30 to 45 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week, can also help maintain your weight.
